What are the Guidelines for Designing Hospital Interiors?

When we create the interiors of hospitals, we are not merely selecting attractive artwork and stylish furniture. In addition to being visually appealing, we ensure that the hospital provides a functional environment.

From the entrance onward, color, lighting, and signage are utilized effectively to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The interior is consistently bright and well-ventilated, making a positive first impression on visitors and helping them feel comfortable. The arrangement of furniture and other elements is designed to make individuals feel invited as soon as they enter.

Below are some of the principles we adhere to in Hospital Interior Design:

Efficiency:

We follow Lean Management principles. To deliver healthcare services effectively, with the best use of manpower and resources, it is crucial for the hospital's interiors to be designed to enhance staff efficiency and facilitate easy supervision.

Sanitation:

We pay special attention to cleanliness in our interior design. Different areas of the hospital, depending on their function, must be easy to clean and maintain sanitized.

Accessibility:

Given that hospitals are frequented by a large number of individuals with various disabilities, our interior design complies with all statutory and non-statutory accessibility requirements. Individuals with disabilities, whether permanent or temporary, should be able to access and navigate the facility effortlessly.

Safety:

Since hospitals are environments where individuals recover from serious illnesses and undergo treatments, including surgeries, it is essential that the interiors are planned and designed to ensure patient safety. Key areas of focus include corridors, staircases, and ramps, ensuring they are non-slip, equipped with adequate railings, and have permissible slopes to prevent accidents.

Ambience:

Hospitals are inherently stressful environments. Every individual who enters a hospital is confronting illness or injury due to an accident, necessitating a calming atmosphere that promotes comfort and ease. Therefore, hospitals must prioritize creating a pleasant, soothing ambience that supports the patients' swift recovery. The ambient temperature in various areas of the hospital is crucial, as it is carefully regulated and complemented with sufficient ventilation.

We prioritize the use of Natural Light in our designs, as this element is vital for health and well-being. Studies indicate that natural light can lower stress levels, blood pressure, and heart rate, while also facilitating healing. Consequently, we ensure that patients have ample access to nature and natural light through the extensive use of windows, skylights, and outdoor areas.

Controlling Infections:

Hospital-acquired infections pose a significant challenge, but they can be mitigated during the design phase by selecting appropriate materials, wall and surface finishes, and furniture. Hard flooring surfaces are easier to clean compared to carpets, and smooth surfaces do not encourage bacterial growth. In some cases, we suggest applying antimicrobial coatings to further minimize infection spread. Additional design elements we incorporate include automated doors, touchless faucets, and soap dispensers, as well as seamless flooring that eliminates cracks and crevices.

Reducing Noise:

Noise control is essential in areas such as Emergency Departments and intensive care units. Extensive research in acoustics has led to innovative solutions in hospital design aimed at minimizing noise and fostering a tranquil environment. Some strategies we implement include noise-reducing curtains, sound-absorbing ceiling tiles, and carpeting to diminish sound levels.

Signage:

Our primary principle is that visitors to a hospital should be able to navigate to their desired location without needing to ask for directions. For those who are unfamiliar with the hospital's layout, wayfinding can often be a source of frustration and stress. Typically, a mix of color-coded signage and other visual cues is employed. Our patient-friendly interior designs create clear sightlines and logical traffic flows, making it easier for individuals to find their way around.
